Deportivo vrs Sevilla - Jan 10th 2009

Hey, sorry for the delay in posting.. I hope this blog picks up monentum in the coming months.

What a game tonight!!! Manolo was under pressure before kick off with many press reports suggesting Laudrup would take over should Sevilla lose tonight.

2nd of 3 games against Deportivo tonight (2 copa del rey and 1 la liga game) in 7 days.. so some players rested at kick off.

The game started quote slowly... Fabiano had the best chance.. a snap shot at the edge of the area that whistled past the post. However Deportivo started to play better and before long took the lead. An superb pass through the defence was met by the run of Bodipo, who take one touch before firing in to the net. The shot initally looked to all that it hit the side netting.. but it was mainly down to Palop's lack of movement. The ball had in fact hit the back of the net... and Deportivo were 1 nil up.

Deportivo 1 Sevilla 0

Worse was to come for Sevilla when, just before half time, Marseca ran into Bodipo and appeared to use his elbow in an attempt to get past him. The referee showed the red card instantly, much to the dismay of the Sevilla players and especially Maresca.

Half time - Deportivo La Courna 1 Sevilla 0

The 2nd half kicked off with Kanoute on for Crespo in an effort to get back into the game, and within 6 minutes it worked

Kanoute passed to Fabiano who shot home! Game back on!

Deportivo 1 Sevilla 1

the game then ebbed and flowed until the 78th minute. A quick counter attack ended up with Kanoute picking up a deep cross before crossing again for Renato to head home. With 12 minutes left this was an amazing turn around!

Deportivo 1 Sevilla 2

Deportivo then piled on the pressure and Palop pulled off 2 tremendous saves!
The first save was from Sergio! The shot was from 30 yards, but Palop did well to turn around the post with his fore arm

The next wonder save was from a corner that was not cleared. Lopo this time with the acrobatic shot that Palop instinctively turned over the bar.

Was looking like Deportivo would snatch a late equaliser, until in injury time Navas picked up a Kanoute pass and sprinted past the Deportivo left back before squaring the ball for Capel to score his 2nd goal of the season, but more importantly, score the goal that secured the 3 points for Sevilla!!!

Deportivo 1 Sevilla 3

Seconds after the restart it was all over.. a great 3 points and probably saved the manager's season!

Steaua Bucharest 0 Sevilla 2

Qualification from the group stages of the Champions League is all but certain now after Renato scored twice in Romania in a match controlled from the start by the visitors. It has been a dream debut campaign so far (albiet a 3-0 loss in London).

The game started with the team playing in a slightly different formation than in La Liga. Kanoute played up front on his own (later switched for Fabiano) and Renato played as a more attack minded midfielder. The formation was 4-2-3-1 with Navas and De Mul (later Capel) as wingers. Adriano filled in at left back for the injured Crespo (fractured cheek from Real Madrid game).

The game started and after chance after chance Poulsen headed towards goal from a corner kick. The keeper made a great low save but Renato was on hand to tap it in from 4 metres. The Steaua defence looked like statues! It really did look that easy for Renato, but to his credit, he was in the right place at the right time.

Kanoute fired in a few more shots as half time approached but was foiled by the Steaua keeper. The half ended with Sevilla in total control.

Half time - Steaua 0 Sevilla 1

the second goal was one of the greatest goals you will see all season. Renato won a loose ball 25 metres from goal and fed Daniel Alves:

Alves-Renato-Alves dummy and back heel to Navas - Navas takes one touch to deaden the ball - looks up and crosses - Renato diving header. GOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!

A few minutes later Capel made a fine run and pass to Jesus Navas who hit the bar with a strange cross/shot that the keeper managed to get a finger to. From the resulting corner Renato almost had his hat trick with yet another header, but was foiled again by Zapata. Steaua really have a great keeper, who if it wasn't for, could have lost by 5 or 6.

Despite a late rally from Steaua, Sevilla left Romania with 3 points, 2 fine goals and a clean sheet.

A good nights work!

Full time: Steaua 0 Sevilla 2

Sevilla 2 Real Madrid 0

After the disappointment of Wednesday night, Sevilla were up against their 2nd Madrid challenge in 4 days. This time La Liga Champions Real Madrid rolled into Andalusia fresh of the back of a 5-1 mauling of Valencia midweek.

Sevilla welcomed back Kanoute, but Jose Crespo stayed at left back in place of Dragutinovic who moved into central defence with Fazio.

As usual Sevilla were first out of the traps and after only 2 minutes Luis Fabiano rattled the ball off the legs of Casillas from 8 yards out. Daniel played a lovely ball over the Madrid defence and Kanouted headed on for Fabiano, but his shot was blocked.

Real came into the game, but didn't really trouble Palop in the opening stages, and just when it looked like Sevilla were running out of ideas, up popped Keita from 25 yards out. Casillas was helpless as the ball swerved away from his outstreched glove. Great goal from the new signing. To be honest, Keita was given an awful lot of time by the Madrid defence to set himself up for the shot, but nothing should be taken away from the finish itself.

Madrid looked stunned, but before they could even fashion a chance Kanoute rushed through the middle after a long ball was played into his path. After expertly controlling the ball, Kanoute tested Casillas. The shot was too hot to handle, and Fabiano beat Cannavaro to the loose ball to sweep the ball home from 6 yards.

Sevilla 2 Real Madrid 0 - only 21 minutes on the clock.

From then on in the game got ugly. On 35 Minutes Fazio was replaced by Mosquera in what only could have meant an injury to the big defender. I didn't see what happened, but hopefully I will find out soon.

Real seemed determined to injure as many players as possible. First up was left midfielder Adriano. His attempt to chase back after losing the ball resulting in him winning the ball from Guti. However, Adriano took an elbow to the face for his trouble, and had to leave the field for a while with a bloody nose.

40 minutes on the clock and Crespo was the next in line for rough treatment. An elbow from Diarra (I think it was) seemed to pierce the skin on his cheek and the swelling was so bad he had to go off. Hopefully it is not a broken cheek bone.

Jimenez threw on Capel in place of the injured Crespo, with Adriano moved to left back, and Capel left wing. Not surprisingly, it took only a few seconds before Capel felt the force of Madrid's tackling. Twice in the space of a few moments the youngester hit the deck. The game was threatening to boil over and it wasn't helped when Ramos kicked Keita off the park as Keita shielded the ball for a throw in. The big midfielder lost his cool for a moment and pushed Ramos, with Ramos returning a hand around Keita's throat. The referee booked both players for their actions. Keita can have no complaints, but you can understand his anger.

The first half ended with whistles ringing around the stadium for the referee. The fans obviously felt more protection should be shown to Sevilla players, and I tend to agree. The referee seemed to have taken this to heart and within 5 minutes of the restart he booked Robinho and Ramos for the 2nd time. The big defender heading off the pitch to the joy of the home crowd. It was an uphill battle all the way for Real as it was, which was made harder by the stupidity of Ramos.

The 2nd half didn't match the excitment of the 1st half, and I actually missed some of it due to a long distance phone call from an old friend. I did notice however that there was a booking for Capel and Drago. Real picked up a couple of more yellows. This time for Raul, Balboa, Guti and Diarra.

Final score SEVILLA 2 REAL MADRID 0

an excellent score against the Champions. Our league form does not look in doubt at home, but points must be picked up away from home from now on.

Sevilla v Real Madrid Preview

Real Madrid are the visitors and the stadium is colourful, as nearly all Sevilla fans have followed through on the club's appeal to wear the polo shirt supplied to them when the renewed their season ticket at the start of the season. The idea is to create a special atmosphere and inspire the team to victory. Lets hope it works!

La Liga - Week 10 review

Quite an interesting midweek of football to report on in La Liga

Barcelona dropped 2 points away to Valladolid in Thursday's big game. Ronaldinho equalising after Llorente gave the home side a shock lead after 15 mins. Barca never really got going in this game, but Valladolid will be delighted to have held both Real Madrid and Barca now at home to draws.

The score line is good news for Real Madrid and Villarreal who both took 3 points this gameweek and sit in first and third place respectively. Barca move into 2nd place on goal difference.

Real Madrid hammered Valencia 5-1 in the Mestalla. Robinho looking exceptional and grabbing the 5th after being instrumental in many Real attacks. Valencia manager in waiting Ronald Koeman will have had plenty to think about following this game.

Villarreal enjoyed a comfortable 3-0 home win over Levante, which seen the yellow submarine occupy 2nd place temporarily. Franco, Rossi and Cygan all getting the goals.

Thursday's other game saw Espanyol draw 0-0 with Real Murcia. Espanyol fans will be disappointed they did not see their team capatalise on Barca's slip up.

At the bottom end of the table, Getafe will be delighted with another 3 points against Athletic club Bilbao. This will ease the pressure on Michael Laudrup, who admitted he would have been sacked by now if he was in Italy. Winning away to Tottenham has certainly eased the pressure, as well as 2 La Liga wins in recent weeks. One has the feeling that the only was is up for Getafe.

Deportivo and Betis find themselves in a real mess near the foot of the table, although Depor managed a 1-1 draw at home to Mallorca, whilst Betis crashed 3-0 at home to Osasuna.
